People tend to overestimate the kinds of numbers a MMO needs to be "successful".
Even half a Mill is a strong enough player base for any MMO.

It should indeed, especially since most MMO's implement some kind of cross realm for PvP and PvE or work with instances (like in AoC).

But I assume the larger the playerbase, the larger the income hence the more updates for the game, no?

Elder Scrolls Online will be one of the biggest MMO fails, mark my words ...
Just like all the rest of them have been tbh

its fine if you can sustain that half a million tho and then if you want to develop more things and give regular content updates, the fewer subs the less monies, the less monies the less content.

Lets take Warhammer online as an example, it started with sales of around 1.2 million and 800k user accounts, a month after release it was down to 750k, within 3 months of release the sub count was down to 300k. 5 months after this they were still at 300k the companu then posted a loss of $1.08 BILLIOIN
From the end of 2011 they were ONLY running 3 servers 1 US, 1 German 1 rest of EU they shut it down 2 years later.

500k is nowere near enough to cover the cost of a MMO that has such a huge budget and development time such as ESO

dev costs are recouped from initial sales, box copy will be what 35-40 with a 60 ltd version and probably a 100 super crazy version. With the add sub fee for further dev it actually would be able to sustain at 500k.
MMO running costs aren't actually that much in the grand scheme.
We can take wow for this, it costs ABOUT $20 million per month to run WoW, they make $52.5 million (at 3.5 million subs @15 a month). It works out that they COULD live on $6 per month subs and STILL make money on it.

The est budget of ESO is around $200 million which they know they probably won't make back all that quickly. Skyrim made them around $210 million with 3.5 million sales, but once you tag MMO onto something you put some of the audience off anyway as some people dont like playing with the masses of idiots out there.

That and the fact that the MMO tag often means a recurring fee, which also puts off alot of gamers.
